UEFA Tightens VAR Guidelines to Reduce Match Interruptions

UEFA and refereeing officials from all 55 European national associations have agreed on a unified set of guidelines for the 2026-27 season designed to improve consistency, increase effective playing time, and reduce unnecessary interruptions caused by VAR reviews.

The meeting, held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon with participation from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), focused on implementing the latest changes to the Laws of the Game and ensuring a common interpretation across European competitions.

A key outcome was the reaffirmation that VAR should intervene only in cases involving a "clear and obvious error" or a significant incident missed by the referee. UEFA emphasized that video technology is intended to support officials—not replace the authority of the referee on the field.

The organization also called for fewer lengthy on-field reviews, arguing that extended checks often indicate the original decision was not clearly wrong. In addition, officials agreed on standardized procedures for handling mistaken player identification.

UEFA also backed IFAB's recently approved measures to combat time-wasting. Referees will be instructed to apply stricter standards regarding goal kicks, throw-ins, substitutions, and injury stoppages in an effort to keep the ball in play for longer periods.

Another important initiative focuses on improving communication between referees and team captains, following the successful approach introduced during UEFA Euro 2024. The objective is to reduce dissent and promote greater respect toward match officials.

UEFA Head of Refereeing Roberto Rosetti described the agreement as an important step toward ensuring consistent rule interpretation across Europe, providing greater clarity for players, coaches, clubs, and supporters. The governing body also confirmed that additional initiatives regarding the implementation of VAR protocols will be announced before the start of the new season.
