Australia seized total control of their 298-run chase with a blistering first Powerplay, racing to 96/1 in 10 overs behind Mitchell Marsh's whirlwind knock. Marsh tore South Africa's new-ball attack apart from the outset, blasting five boundaries and six towering maximums on his way to an electric 36-ball 60. Combined with Travis Head's fluent 27* off 20 deliveries, Australia took the game by the scruff of the neck before Keshav Maharaj pulled things back in the 10th over.

Flighting one up outside off with a hint of turn, Maharaj induced a sliced drive from Marsh that Matthew Breetzke held with a tumbling effort at cover. Despite the breakthrough, Australia enter the middle overs needing only 202 runs from 240 balls with nine wickets firmly intact.

End of 50 Overs - South Africa 297/8

South Africa rebounded from early setbacks on a tricky surface to post a competitive 297/8 in the opening ODI against Australia. After losing Tony de Zorzi and Quinton de Kock cheaply inside the opening eight overs, Matthew Breetzke served as the backbone of the innings, as he scored an exceptional 112 off 106 deliveries.

However, the real impetus arrived when Marco Jansen joined Breetzke at 168/5, turning the contest on its head with a blistering 75 off 59 balls. The duo added 107 runs in just 14 overs. Australia's bowling attack endured a mixed day as Mitchell Starc appeared rusty, conceding 60 runs without a wicket, while debutant Jack Edwards ended with figures of 0/56. Adam Zampa collected two key middle-order scalps but suffered heavy damage against Jansen, before Nathan Ellis (3/57) helped reel in the death overs to leave Australia chasing 298 for victory.

South Africa lose a fifth wicket as David Miller departed cheaply. Australian bowlers continue to dominate proceedings.

Breetzke anchored the innings with an excellent run-a-ball 63, bringing up his half-century from 54 balls and continued to attack Aussie leg-spinner Zampa, who had earlier dismissed Ryan Rickelton for 27 - his second wicket of the game.

Breetzke's partnership with Rickelton had helped stabilise the innings before the breakthrough, while veteran David Miller has taken time to settle in, batting on 8 off 18.

Australia kept things tight through the middle overs, but the Proteas have managed to find a way to steadily accelerate with a 300-plus score looking like a real possibility.

South Africa reached 93/3 after 20 overs, with Breetzke and Bavuma rebuilding after the early wickets. The pair added 47 runs, with Breetzke playing the more aggressive hand with 38 off 40 balls, including five fours and a six.

Bavuma made a patient 30 off 48 before falling to Adam Zampa. Ryan Rickelton joined Breetzke at the crease, with South Africa adding 53 more runs since the end of the powerplay.

South Africa struggled to get going in the opening 10 overs, reaching 40/2 after a disciplined start from Australia's pace attack.

Josh Hazlewood removed Tony de Zorzi for a duck before Nathan Ellis struck with his first ball to dismiss Quinton de Kock for 14. Temba Bavuma continues to battle at 9 off 25 balls, while Matthew Breetzke attempted to shift the momentum with two boundaries in his first over.
