Arsenal transfer target is not good enough for Man United - 'he's come up short'

Manchester United have already made waves in the summer transfer window and could bring in more talent, but one Reds legend has told them to swerve a potential target who 'isn't good enough'

Dwight Yorke has warned Manchester United that Bruno Guimaraes 'isn't good enough' to play at Old Trafford next season. The Reds are on the lookout for midfield reinforcement following Casemiro's exit as a free agent.

And while they have secured Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a £35million move, and Chelsea's Andrey Santos for £48m, it appears as though United are still on the search for one last upgrade to their engine room. While that last addition looked increasingly likely to be Atalanta's Ederson, the Brazilian midfielder has since signed a contract extension with his current club after a £35m deal fell through.

Guimaraes is another name who has been linked with a move to Greater Manchester in the coming months, although Arsenal appear to be in a pole position for the 28-year-old, should they meet Newcastle United's asking price - which is thought to be in the region of £80m-£85m.

But according to United legend, Yorke, missing out on Guimaraes may not be the worst thing in the world. The 54-year-old, who represented the Reds between 1998 and 2002, said via football odds makers, BOYLE Sports: "I don't know about Bruno Guimaraes.

"I'm not sure he has been that impressive. I watched him play for Brazil at the World Cup and he’s not convinced me.

"I think he’s good. He’s shown that at Newcastle United. He’s got a good work ethic. I understand the value of that. But is that what you’re paying for when you sign a player to come to Manchester United? A good work ethic?

"Listen, he’s a solid player and maybe he’s good enough to get into a team at the level Manchester United should be at but is going to take them to another level? Will Bruno Guimaraes put United any closer to the Premier League title?

"If so, he’s a good signing. But he doesn’t excite me. I’m not seeing him picking up a ball and boom, sending over one of those diagonal passes or cutting defenders apart with one ball.

"I just don’t see that quality from him. That’s why his performances for Brazil worried me. He was just another solid player in that team.

"They’re all solid players. I’m not saying he’s not a good player but is that where United are at now? Just buying players because they’re solid?

"Bring me players that are going to make us superior! I'm not so sure that’s Bruno Guimaraes. The World Cup was an opportunity for him to tell the world there's a reason why a team like Manchester United are going to be after me, and he’s come up short, in my opinion."

Yorke also suggested that his former club would be more suited to snapping up Lille youngster, Ayyoub Bouaddi, who enjoyed a sensational World Cup campaign with Morocco. At just 18, the midfielder proved on the world stage that he can hang with the most experience talents, leading a number of clubs to register an interest.
