Pinoy pride: House honors Alex Eala for historic Wimbledon feat

The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution honoring Alexandra Eala for making history as the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 in the singles draw of a Grand Slam tournament at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

House Resolution No. 1190, principally authored by Speaker Faustino Dy III, House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, and House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Eala’s historic Wimbledon campaign was highlighted by victories over Renata Zarazúa, Maya Joint, and defending champion Iga Świątek before she bowed out in a hard-fought fourth-round match against Jasmine Paolini.

The resolution cited Eala’s outstanding grass-court season, which included her Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125 title in Birmingham and a semifinal finish at the Berlin Tennis Open, saying her achievements have elevated Philippine tennis on the international stage.

HR 1190 also traced Eala’s rise from a four-year-old aspiring tennis player to one of the sport’s brightest young stars.

The House noted that, at just 21 years old, Eala has brought immense pride and honor to the nation and continues to inspire young Filipinos to pursue excellence through dedication and determination.

A copy of the resolution will be handed over to Eala.

The House adopted the resolution just hours before Eala stunned defending Washington Open champion Leylah Fernandez to advance to the quarterfinals, extending what has already become the finest season by a Filipino tennis player.
