China youth player punches, kicks opponent after losing table tennis trial match

A 14-year-old Chinese table tennis player ruined his chance of reaching the national youth set-up and missed a critical early-career development window after punching his opponent following a loss.

Cao Yanhao was thrust into the public eye on Tuesday night when the Jiangsu Table Tennis Association issued a disciplinary notice imposing a provincewide reprimand, disqualifying his results, and banning him from provincial competitions for one year.

The previous day, Cao lost 3-0 to teammate He Ruichen in the under-14 semi-finals of the Jiangsu selection trials for the national youth training camp, capped by an 11-0 defeat in the final game, before punching his opponent, with video footage of the incident quickly going viral.

Video showed Cao hitting his final shot into the net before his opponent approached to offer the customary handshake, only for Cao to drop his bat and strike him directly in the head.

As his opponent recoiled against the court barrier, Cao kicked him in the lower body before venue staff stepped in to stop him.

In a disciplinary notice released the following day, the Jiangsu Table Tennis Association stated that the athlete punched his opponent after losing, disrupting match order and causing a negative impact.
