Here's why Jasprit Bumrah not playing ODI series decider against England

LONDON: India have suffered a major setback ahead of the third and final ODI against England after premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury.

Captain Shubman Gill confirmed at the toss on Sunday that Bumrah had been left out due to a knee problem, with India making three changes to the side following their defeat in Cardiff.

With the three-match series level at 1-1, KL Rahul returned after recovering from illness, while Prince Yadav and Arshdeep Singh were also included for the decider at Lord's.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Bumrah sustained the injury while fielding during the second ODI in Cardiff and was subsequently ruled out of the series decider after developing reactive swelling in his left knee.

"Jasprit Bumrah sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee," the statement read.

Bumrah completed his full allocation of overs in the second ODI, returning figures of 1-45 after claiming 1-31 from nine overs in the series opener.

India had already been dealt another injury blow a day earlier after the BCCI confirmed that all-rounder Washington Sundar had been ruled out of the third ODI with a hamstring injury.

Harsh Dubey was subsequently added to the squad, although India opted not to include either him or spinner Kuldeep Yadav, instead strengthening their pace attack.

Rahul's return meant Shivam Dube was left out, while Ishan Kishan retained his place after replacing the wicketkeeper-batter in the second ODI.

Explaining the inclusion of left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, Gill said India had prioritised conditions over statistics.

"We're not the ones who rely on stats so much. We think he's a great bowler, and we were looking for four seamers on this ground. We have seen in the middle overs that spinners don't really offer as much as the fast bowlers," Gill said.

England also made one change to the side that won the second ODI in Cardiff, recalling Josh Tongue in place of Saqib Mahmood.
