Horrific injury sours stunning late comeback from Swans

Sydney have produced a stunning fourth-quarter performance to surge home over St Kilda - but the victory came at a massive cost.

With a top-two spot on the AFL ladder on the line, the Swans kicked seven goals in the final term to topple the Saints 16.11 (107) to 13.10 (88).

“That was a fourth quarter masterclass by their stars,” St Kilda legend Leigh Montagna said on Fox League after the full-time siren.

But the win for the Bloods didn’t come without some heartache, with young gun Will Edwards stretchered from the field with a serious leg injury.

The 23-year-old leapt for a marking contest and landed awkwardly, appearing to break his leg in the process while also being left bleeding from his head.

“That’s gone sideways, that’s broken. We won’t show that again - and to top it all off, you get your head split open as well. That is a nasty one,” Jason Dunstall said.

Edwards was clapped off as he was carted from Marvel Stadium via medi-cab.

“To see a player battle like he has for so long, to get a chance at AFL with some of the injuries that he’s already had, to dislocate his ankle and require to go to hospital and have surgery ... it’s devastating for the football club and his family,” Swans coach Dean Cox said of Edwards’ injury post-game.

He wasn’t the only Swans player to suffer an injury either, with teammate James Rowbottom leaving the field with a suspected broken hand.

St Kilda will have their own injury headaches to handle after the defeat, with Jack Silvagni spotted wearing a sling after suffering a shoulder injury.
