Longford on the lookout for manager as Solan resigns

Manager Mike Solan has quit Longford after two seasons in charge, alongside coaches Enda McGahern and Joe Keane.

Solan guided the midlanders to promotion to Division 3 of the National Football League in the spring following a dramatic, comeback victory over Wicklow.

They were well beaten by Westmeath in their Leinster Championship opener, before a Tailteann Cup defeat to Fermanagh.

They kept things going with a win over Clare before eventual finalists Down ended their summer.

"I would like to place on record my thanks to all involved with the Senior Football team over the past two seasons," he said in a statement released by Longford GAA.

"We were lucky to have a fantastic backroom team with people who are very passionate about Longford football.

"A special word of thanks to the players who have worked so hard and represented Longford with such pride and were always fantastic ambassadors for Longford anywhere the team travelled. I am very proud to have been associated with such a brilliant group of men.

"I wish Longford nothing but the very best as the team moves forward after gaining promotion to Division 3 for next season. It is my hope that the team will be supported in every way possible to keep striving to improve and drive the standards needed to keep developing."

Solan was appointed ahead of the 2025 season, which saw the county lose to Wicklow in Leinster, before failing to emerge from their group in the Tailteann Cup.

McGahern was there from the start with Solan, having guided the county to their first Leinster minior title in 14 years in 2024.

Keane, meanwhile, joined the management team in 2025.

The new manager will have the task of making Longford competitive in Division 3, with the county set to play there for the first time since 2023.
