Liverpool news: Arne Slot sack decision reached as real reason for exit confirmed

Today's Liverpool news round-up includes an update on Arne Slot as the Reds gear up to return to Premier League action

Liverpool will be looking to gain three crucial points in their bid for a top-five finish when they host Fulham on Saturday evening. The Reds will head into the game with a sense of sadness, knowing another legend of Jurgen Klopp's iconic Premier League and Champions League-winning side will be leaving at the end of the season.

Andy Robertson broke fans' hearts when he confirmed on Thursday night that he is to leave Anfield after almost nine years this summer. The veteran full-back has been instrumental for Klopp and Arne Slot.

His departure follows other architects of Liverpool's success leaving the club in recent times. Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid last summer, while the earth-shattering news that Mohamed Salah will also depart the club at the end of the current campaign broke last month.

Today's Liverpool news sees the under-fire Slot get an update over his future from Kop bosses. Elsewhere, Robertson's reason for leaving has been revealed.

Update on Slot's future

Despite Liverpool struggling in the Premier League, and their Champions League hopes dangling by a thread after PSG's 2-0 win in Paris on Tuesday, the Reds are not thought to be considering relieving Slot of his duties.

According to The Telegraph, the decision-makers within Fenway Sports Group believe the former Feyenoord boss deserves to keep his position for next season. It's believed the club wish to give the Dutchman another transfer window to build his team before making any major decisions.

The tricky nature of finding Slot's replacement is also said to be a sticking point for Liverpool in pulling the trigger on the Premier League-winning manager. One option who some fans have linked with the Reds job, former midfielder and captain Steven Gerrard, believes Slot will be on borrowed time should the Reds fail to beat Fulham on Saturday.

He told talkSPORT: "The players have admitted it, the manager has, it's not good enough. It's a huge week, they've got to stand up and be counted, stick together and grasp the opportunity to put pressure on Aston Villa and Manchester United against Fulham, which is arguably as important.

"It's key, that's why I say I think the Fulham game is just as important. If the ownership sees that gap to Villa or United stretch, I worry for the manager's position."

Robertson's reason for leaving

Slot has revealed just why Robertson has elected to leave Liverpool this summer. The Scot, 32, joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and helped usher in a new era of success for the Merseyside club.

However, he has found himself largely out of the team since the summer, with Milos Kerkez often selected for the left-back spot this season. Speaking on why Robertson is to depart, Slot said: "He has won everything here, really loves this club, it has been a great nine years at the club.

"But we saw this season he didn't play as much as he used to and as a result of that he is leaving. It is difficult to be in that position longer than a season. Every player wants as much regular first-team football as possible.

"He had many great seasons over here as a player but I think people got to know him as a great person as well. I got to know him, every team-mate will tell you how funny he is and how great a person he is and that has been shown a lot on social media as well.

"What I remember most about him is the intensity he is always playing with. We have learned something about intensity two days ago, but I can [remember] Robbo making a press from left full-back to right-back a few years ago and I showed that to the players I was working with then."

Robertson's contract at Anfield is due to expire in June. There had been speculation that he could sign another deal with Liverpool, however, The Athletic reports that Tottenham Hotspur are confident of landing the left-back, should they avoid relegation this season.
