Former India Under-19 cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill dies at 36

Amanpreet Singh Gill played youth one-dayers and a three-day Test in 2007, touring England, Malaysia and Sri Lanka with the India Under-19 team in that period

Former India Under-19 and Punjab medium pacer Amanpreet Singh Gill died at the age of 36 in Chandigarh on Wednesday. The cause of death is not yet known.

Gill, who was Virat Kohli's team-mate at the Under-19 level, featured in six first-class matches for Punjab between 2006 and 2008, picking up 11 wickets. He was also part of Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in the inaugural IPL season, and later served as a member of Punjab's senior selection committee. The PBKS players wore black armbands during their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday night in Hyderabad as a mark of respect for Amanpreet.

Kohli tweeted that he was "shocked and saddened" to get the news, while Yuvraj Singh also paid tribute to Gill, saying "Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill's passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game."

The Punjab Cricket Association also tweeted out its condolences: "Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and member, senior selection committee Punjab. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones."

Gill played a number of youth one-dayers and a three-day youth Test for India in 2007, touring England, Malaysia and Sri Lanka with the team in that period. However, he did not make the Kohli-led India side that went on to win the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.
