Rookie edge rusher Dennis-Sutton missing opportunities due to illness

As happy as the Packers probably are to get second-year edge rusher Collin Oliver a lot of snaps, this game would have been perfect for rookie edge Dani Dennis-Sutton, who is out. Dennis-Sutton had an illness late in the week and was a scratch from the game. The Steelers are throwing quite a bit and it would have been a good opportunity for Dennis-Sutton to show whether he's ready for significant snaps when the season starts.

Oliver and Brenton Cox Jr. have been active with their rush. Cox Jr. will be a factor because he's big enough to play the run. Oliver might be limited to a third-down rusher. Dennis-Sutton has the size and speed to be an every down player, but like all rookies, he needs work.

Safety Mark Perry has returned to the game. He appeared to injure his shoulder when he made a tackle on Steelers tight end Robert Tonyan.

McCord looks sharp in 2-minute drill at end of half

Lost in the Trey Smack booming field goal was quarterback Kyle McCord's excellent manipulation of the 2-minute offense.

McCord had 38 seconds to drive the Packers into scoring range from the 25-yard line.

He threw a slant to Savion Williams for 10 on first down. The clock ran.

He then threw an out to receiver Isaiah Neyor for a 12-yard gain. Clock stopped out of bounds at 22 seconds.

He threw again to Neyor to the sideline for a 5-yard gain, but Neyor failed to get out of bounds and LaFleur called a timeout with 18 seconds left.

McCord threw across the middle to Will Shepherd for an 8-yard gain and then hurried the team to the line of scrimmage where he was able to spike it with 1 second left.

The Packers had no timeouts left, so if he didn't get that spike down, the half would have been over.

Smack's 58-yard boot close to record kick at Acrisure Stadium

Smack's field goal is a yard short of Chris Boswell's all-time long of 59 yards at Acrisure. And he kicked it to the south end, which is the trickest end because it's partially open. The Packers trail the Steelers, 7-6 at halftime

Tonyan's work looks familiar

Robert Tonyan caught that exact route for a touchdown in Indianapolis during the 2020 season. It was just a hair short of the goal line there, but still three straight catches for 53 yards. The former Packers tight end looks pretty good.

Tonyan helps set up Steelers touchdown

Three consecutive receptions of 15yards or more by former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan set up the game's first touchdown. Tonyan was ruled short of the goal-line on his third straight grab, but Nichols gets in the end zone and the Steelers lead 7-3 with less than a minute left in the first quarter

I know Zach Bako-Bewele and Aaron Banks did not play tonight, and neither did Josh Jacobs, but Packers running backs have 20 yards on 10 carries. Some work to do in the run game still.

Another sack for Packers due to blitz pressure

Gannon threw another third-down blitz at the Steelers and this time got a sack out of it. Gannon lined eight up on the line of scrimmage but only brought three. One of them was slot cornerback Kitan Oladapo, who chased quarterback Will Howard from behind and sacked him at the Packers sideline. It was the Packers' third sack of the night.

Steelers whistled for consecutive personal fouls

The Steelers just got called for their third personal foul penalty. They committed two in a row. The first was linebacker Cole Holcomb's hit on quarterback Ty'Rod Taylor as he went into his slide and the second came when receiver Bo Melton did a nice actng job, falling backward dramatically after Steelers cornerback Doneiko Slaughter pushed him in the chest with two hands.

Tyrod Taylor, 37 years old, still running like Hotrod. Picks up a third-and-2 with his wheels and takes a 15-yard penalty at end for late hit from Steelers LB Cole Holcomb.

Packers' defensive backs sharp in red zone

The Packers' red-zone defense proved to be a success because of the play of three young defensive backs.

On one play, rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse cut the legs out from running back Lew Nichols on a play in which Nichols had the corner and appeared headed for a touchdown. Cisse went low and cut Nichols at the knees, dropping him on the 3-yard line. On the next play, defensive tackle Warren Brinson appeared to have the Packers' third sack, but quarterback Mason Rudolph slipped his tackle (and Brinson lost his helmet). Rudolph threw to Germie Bernard in the back of the end zone but rookie safety Murvion Kenion III pushed Bernard out of the end zone. Bernard got one foot in but the officials correctly ruled the other foot touched the back line. Then Perry dropped Freiremuth for the fourth-down stop.

Penalty erases Steelers touchdown

Defensive end Warren Brinson drew a holding call on left tackle Troy Fautanu on Lew Nichols' touchdown run. Cornerback Brandon Cisse took a bad angle and was trapped inside as Nichols bounced the run outside. It would have been a bad mistake on Cisse's part, but the rookie got bailed out when Brinson got held. Both the referee and head linesman threw flags, the hold was so blatant.

Packers already have a pair of sacks

The Packers have now beaten both Steelers starting tackles for sacks. Lukas Van Ness got left tackle Troy Fautanu on the team's first drive and Brenton Cox Jr. got right tackle Dylan Cook on the second.

Cook is the starter in part because first round pick Max Iheanachor is hurt. But Cook could wind up as the starter even after Iheanachor returns.

The Steelers have their No. 1 offensive line in thye game for the entire second drive. The Packers have mostly backups in the game.

Tyrod Taylor, Matt LaFleur seem to have miscommunication in Taylor's first series

Backup quarterback Ty'Rod Taylor and coach Matt LaFleur had a moment of confusion before the second play of Taylor's first drive.

Taylor turned to LaFleur on the sideline and raised his arms up and LaFleur seemed unsure what Taylor was doing. It might have been that Taylor didn't get the call over the headset.

Whatever the case, Taylor didn't panic and got the snap off. His deep ball to receiver Savion Williams was incomplete.

Jonathan Gannon showing blitz looks

After a Lukas Van Ness sack forced a third and 14, defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon did what he has been doing all camp long: he lined up eight players in a blitz look.

He didn't completely back off either. He brought a heavy blitz to the right side where he had Van Ness and Colin Oliver lined up next to each other.

Quarterback Mason Rudolph had a hot play available to him and quickly threew to the left flat to Germie Bernard for a 7-yard gain.

Linebacker Zaire Franklin missed the tackle but safety Xavier McKinney was there to clean it up.

Trey Smack gets to try two field goals on opening drive

Trey Smack kicked two field goals after a 15-yard penalty allowed the Packers to take his original three points off the board the Packers' first drive.

Jordan Love was 3 of 5 on the drive and the catches were made by three different receivers, including running back Marshawn Lloyd.

Ten plays for Packers starting offense on opening drive. Jordan Love completed 3-5 passes for 19 yards, including a 19 yarder to Jayden Reed on third-and-5.

Trey Smack makes 58-yard field goal but Steelers rougher penalty gives Packers first down

Rookie kicker Trey Smack just hit a 58-yard field goal, one yard shy of Chris Boswell's Acrisure Stadium record.

Smack nailed it right down the middle but a roughing the snapper penalty negates the field goal because it gives the Packers a first down at the Steelers 25.

While the Packers get a first down now, Matt LaFleur might've just wanted to let that long field goal from Smack stand regardless of the snapper roughing penalty. That was an impressive boot for the rookie.

MarShawn Lloyd is getting the start at running back and has two carries to start the game.

He had a nice gain on his first carry and had a hole available to him on the second, but he chose to cut inside and settled for a 1-yard gain.

This is the first real football Lloyd has played since last preseason.

The third-year pro missed all of the regular season with an injury. He has only played in one regular season game in his career due to many injuries.

Josh Jacobs has been nursing a groin injury during training camp.

Packers injury update

After returning to practice Tuesday, Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden are at least dressed and going through warmups with specialists 45 minutes before kickoff.

Reed (ankle) and Golden (toe) both missed practices on Sunday and Monday.

Reed missed all of the preseason last summer while battling a foot injury. He then missed a large portion of the season after breaking his collarbone in a Week 2 game.

Golden has had a tremendous training camp in his second season as he looks to play a larger role in the offense.

Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers meet before preseason game

Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers are reunited for the Packers-Steelers preseason game.

Love is expected to play, while Rodgers won't be suiting up.

Love served as Rodgers' backup for three years from 2020-22. He took over as the Packers' starter in 2023 after Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets. Rodgers spent the next two years with the Jets before continuing his career in Pittsburgh last year.

While this is just the preseason, this is the second straight season that Love and the Packers are seeing Rodgers and the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Love's Packers defeated Rodgers' Steelers, 35-25, on "Sunday Night Football" on Oct. 26.

Aaron Rodgers will not play vs Packers tonight

It does not appear as though Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing tonight. Three of the four Steelers quarterbacks are going through warmups and Rodgers is not one of them.

The starter will probably be Mason Rudolph. The other QBs are Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar.

Rodgers said earlier this week about preseason football: "It's not real football."

Trey Smack chats with Chris Boswell pregame

If there's anyone for Packers rookie kicker Trey Smack to get some advice from it's Chris Boswell.

The 23-year-old Smack is looking to find his footing during his first training NFL training camp as he seeks to be the Packers' longterm answer at the position.

Boswell, 35, is entering his 12th NFL season. In 11 years, Boswell is 87.7% for his career on field goals and 95.6% on extra points. Boswell is a two-time Pro Bowler.

In the pregame, Smack was good from 57 yards kicking toward Acrisure Stadium’s vaunted south end zone in warmups.

As Packers reporter Tom Silverstein noted in his pregame story, "There probably isn’t a tougher place rookie kicker Trey Smack could start his professional career than Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The winds, particularly on the south end where the confluence of the three rivers creates unpredictable airflow, are brutal."
