Italian Open 2026: Coco Gauff outlasts Solana Sierra to reach Round of 16

Coco Gauff overcame stubborn resistance from Solana Sierra to advance into the Round of 16 at the Italian Open 2026 on Saturday (9 May).

The USA tennis star, seeded third in the tournament, dropped the first set 5-7 to her Argentine opponent before recovering in the second (6-0) and sealing the win in the third, triumphing 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.

The match, played on clay in Rome, lasted two hours and 10 minutes - a hard-fought contest that tested Gauff despite the dominant middle set. Sierra proved a tricky opponent throughout, converting six of her 10 break point opportunities and saving 63.6 per cent of the 22 break points she faced on her own serve.

Gauff had a mixed day holding, saving just four of the 10 break points she faced and committing five double faults to Sierra's three. But she more than compensated on return, generating 22 break point chances against Sierra's serve and converting eight of them.

Gauff looked to have the match wrapped up after breaking Sierra's serve to lead 5-3 in the decisive set, only for the Argentine to break back immediately. Gauff held firm, though, breaking Sierra once more to seal the win.

The third seed will now look to continue her run in the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 clay-court tournament.
