Mombasa United ready for top-flight test under Moallin

Mombasa United will begin their historic Sportpesa League campaign against Kakamega Homeboyz, with coach Abdulhamid Moallin facing an immediate test of his side’s readiness for top-flight football.

According to the official 2026/27 season fixtures released by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Monday night, the league's opening assignments are scheduled for the weekend of August 29–30.

The newly promoted coastal side have spent the pre-season fine-tuning their squad and tactical approach ahead of their first season among Kenya’s elite, with Moallin tasked with ensuring they make a competitive start to their new chapter.

The youthful tactician, fresh from guiding Young Africans to the Tanzanian Premier League title, brings title-winning experience to a Mombasa United side seeking to establish themselves in the top flight.

Muhamed Mchulla will assist Moallin, while veteran defender Rodgers Aloro has also joined the technical bench, adding experience to a team preparing for the demands of Premier League football.

“We are working very hard ahead of the Kakamega Homeboyz duel. It is our first Premier League game, and we understand the importance of starting well. We have been working on our fitness, tactical organisation and mentality, and we want to go into the match fully prepared,” Moallin said.

The newcomers face an experienced Homeboyz side in a fixture that will quickly expose them to the demands of top-flight football. The opener will test whether Moallin’s preparations have given Mombasa United the fitness and discipline needed for top-flight football.

The gaffer is expected to demand discipline without the ball, quick transitions and a strong work ethic from his players as they seek to avoid being overawed by the occasion.

“We know Kakamega Homeboyz will give us a tough test, so we have to be ready in every aspect. We are working hard in training to improve our fitness, sharpen our tactical approach and build the confidence needed to compete at this level,” he said.

The coach’s immediate task will be to blend the energy of Mombasa United’s youthful squad with the experience available within the technical setup while ensuring the team develops the consistency required over a long Premier League campaign.

A positive start against Homeboyz would provide an important boost to the newcomers’ confidence and underline their intention to compete rather than merely make up the numbers.

Moallin’s immediate task is to turn the promise shown during pre-season into a disciplined, competitive side capable of matching the intensity and physical demands of top-flight football when the points begin to count.

The opening fixture means more than a battle for three points for Mombasa United. It is their first opportunity to prove their promotion was no fluke and that they have the quality, character and ambition to hold their own among Kenya’s established Premier League sides.

And against an experienced Homeboyz outfit, Mombasa United will have an early opportunity to show that their promotion to the Premier League was not the destination, but the beginning of a bigger ambition.
