Football news 2026: Kevin Danso red card; Tottenham vs Chelsea result, video; Sandro Tonali goal, Sydney Super Cup

It might have been a friendly at Accor Stadium, but a spiteful contest played out between Tottenham and Chelsea with Spurs’ Kevin Danso red-carded in a three-minute cameo.

Despite being one-man down, Spurs won 2-1 with a last-minute Richarlison tap-in securing victory.

The Sydney Super Cup fixture started with a fiery exchange early when Conor Gallagher was yellow carded for a challenge on Dario Essugo.

Then after 17 minutes, Spurs’ $192m recruit Sandro Tonali hit a long-shot that deflected and went into the net to fire up the Australian crowd.

Four minutes later Chelsea hit back through Estevao who was at the back post and finished off a lovely cross by Jamie Gittens.

Neither side could find the lead before half-time as the score sat at 1-1.

As the players arrived back on the field after the break, it appeared the biggest storyline would be Sydney-born Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli coming on for Chelsea.

However, the flashpoint came three minutes later when Danso, who had come on for Jan Paul Van Hecke, brought down Joao Pedro close to the box.

Danso had a bad touch and turned towards goal as Pedro applied pressure. In trying to recover, the Spurs defender fouled Pedro who had a goalscoring opportunity and was given a red card for it.

For the majority of the second half, Spurs had goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to thank after he continued to save Chelsea shots on goal.

The match then looked like it’d be heading towards penalties to give the 80,363 strong crowd a thrilling finish.

But Spurs had another idea as Jamie Donley fired a shot to the bottom corner. His attempt hit the post and rebounded back with Richarlison claiming a simple tap-in.

Post-match on Paramount+, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso described his players actions as “silly” and “soft” to concede so late.

His rival, Roberto De Zerbi was “very happy” with the result but didn’t think the red card was necessary for a friendly match.

De Zerbi also described the condition of the Accor Stadium pitch as “very bad” considering the money spent by both clubs.

The Spurs manager also confessed he wants to return to Australia one day.

“But not for work, just for a holiday,” he smiled.
