Away from the pitch, the tournament also caused an unusual transformation: some of the most recognizable stadiums had to temporarily change their image, modify their names, and hide their usual branding to comply with FIFA regulations.

Among those venues was one of the most famous stadiums in American football: Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. During the World Cup, the venue in Foxborough, Massachusetts, stopped using its traditional name and was presented as Boston Stadium, a temporary change that caught the attention of fans familiar with the history of the venue.

The change was not limited to the name. As happened at other World Cup venues, the brand’s visual presence also had to disappear for a period of time. Logos, commercial references, and elements connected to sponsorship rights were covered to meet FIFA’s requirements.

Gillette Stadium restored its identity after the World Cup

After hosting seven tournament matches, including the quarterfinal clash between France and Morocco, the stadium entered a new phase: bringing back everything it had been forced to hide during the competition.

The return of its name came in a rather unconventional way. Instead of simply revealing its original image again, the team behind the stadium created an AI-generated video with a humorous twist, showing two workers removing a layer of foam covering the Gillette name, making a direct reference to the brand’s products.

The idea turned a simple restoration process into a creative farewell to its World Cup run. The message was clear: after weeks operating under a temporary identity, Gillette Stadium was ready to be recognized as itself once again.

Now, with its name visible and its image restored, Gillette Stadium returns to its usual routine. However, its time at the 2026 World Cup will be remembered for a unique curiosity: it was a venue that had to stop being called what it had always been, only to find the most creative way to become itself again.
