Manchester United have been linked with multiple players ahead of the summer transfer window

Manchester United can begin to switch their focus to the transfer window after securing Champions League qualification. The club face several key decisions in the summer, including the appointment of a permanent manager.

Whether Michael Carrick remains in the dugout, the interim boss has admitted he is involved in discussions about their transfer plans. Reinforcing the squad will be pivotal as United look to compete on multiple fronts next term.

Sporting CP star Maxi Araujo has emerged as a reported target ahead of the summer window. United captain Bruno Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford from the Portuguese giants in 2020 and the club would hope Araujo can replicate his success, should a move materialise.

Elsewhere, Carrick’s side have also been linked with a move for AC Milan star Rafael Leao. Here, Mirror Football looks at some of the biggest stories surrounding United.

Portuguese outlet A Bola lists United as one of several clubs to show interest in the Uruguay international. It is reported that the club have held exploratory talks with the player’s agents.

Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are said to have also spoken to his representatives. However, Atletico Madrid are claimed to be currently leading the race for his signature.

Araujo has three years remaining on his Sporting contract, which includes a £69million release clause. He is viewed as a priority for Atletico but United could challenge Diego Simeone’s side in their hunt for a new left-back.

Worrying update overseas

Manchester United have recently been linked with a move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao but could be worried by his recent form. The Portugal international has been criticised by Italian media after his “poor” display in Serie A.

It has previously been reported that Leao could be available for around £52m in the summer, with United holding an interest. The 26-year-old has been with Milan since 2019 but appears to be performing below his usual standards.

Calciomercato slammed his recent performance against Atalanta as Milan’s hopes of securing a Champions League place suffered a blow. Leao, who was described as having an “apathetic attitude”, was substituted before the hour mark with his side trailing 3-0.

Leao has scored 10 goals this term for Max Allegri’s side. While United may be worried by the attacker's lack of form, the club could help him rediscover his prolific best at Old Trafford, should he arrive.
