Kobbie Mainoo was set to leave Old Trafford three months ago, but is now poised to be rewarded with a new contract that will keep him there until 2031

Kobbie Mainoo is poised to quadruple his wages after agreeing a new deal with Manchester United.

The England midfielder has been in negotiations with club bosses for the last three months. And it's understood Mainoo is poised to sign a long-term contract worth £120,000-a-week, that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.

The news represents a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Mainoo, who turned 21 on Sunday. Just a few months ago Mainoo was set to leave United to join Napoli on a six month loan deal until the end of this season.

Mainoo had become fed up with life at Old Trafford, after former boss Ruben Amorim refused to pick him. Mainoo feared his chances of making England's World Cup squad would be dead and buried due to Amorim's treatment of him.

But when Amorim was sacked and replaced with Michael Carrick on an interim basis, Mainoo decided to remain at United.

Carrick re-instated Mainoo, who has gone on to have an influential role in helping United climb to third place in the table.

While Carrick is reluctant to get involved in contract negotiations involving his players, he has been keen to see Mainoo rewarded with a new deal. It's understood Carrick spoke to club bosses to outline the long-term value of Mainoo.

And Carrick endorsed the club's decision to hand Mainoo a huge hike in wages, to reflect his important to the team now and in the future.

Mainoo won back his place in the England squad last month, and is growing increasingly confident he will be on the plane to the World Cup in North America in June.
