Pakistan’s golden run ends in silver at ITF Masters World C’ships

LAHORE - Pakistan secured a historic silver medal in the 45+ category after a fiercely contested 2-1 defeat to top seeds and tournament favourites Spain in the championship final. The runners-up finish represents Pakistan’s finest-ever result at the ITF Masters World Team Championships and caps an outstanding week for the country’s veteran tennis players, who combined experience, resilience and determination to reach the world final. Spain ultimately secured the title after winning the decisive second singles rubber. Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan went down 6-4, 6-2 to Francisco Javier Martinez Baena in a high-quality encounter between two of the tournament’s leading performers.

Aqeel had enjoyed an exceptional campaign before the final, producing a series of impressive performances in singles while also contributing strongly in doubles alongside former Pakistan No. 1 Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi. After several consecutive days of physically demanding and high-intensity matches, however, the accumulated fatigue proved a factor against a fresh and formidable Spanish side. Pakistan’s road to the final was particularly impressive. The team overcame strong opposition from the United States, Canada, hosts Portugal and Sweden to earn its place in the championship decider and secure a place on the podium. The achievement was made even more significant by the strength and international character of the competition. With more than 30 nations and over 300 players taking part, Pakistan emerged as the only Asian nation to win a medal, underlining the country’s growing presence and competitiveness on the international Masters tennis circuit.

The medal ceremony at the Jamor Tennis Centre provided a fitting conclusion to Pakistan’s memorable campaign. The Pakistani players received their silver medals and runners-up trophy from the President of the International Tennis Federation and the President of the Portuguese Tennis Federation. The ceremony was also attended by Paulo Domingues, Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan, whose presence and support were warmly appreciated by the Pakistani contingent. Speaking after the ceremony, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi paid tribute to his teammates and everyone who contributed to Pakistan’s remarkable campaign. “This has been an unforgettable week for Pakistan tennis,” Aisam said. “I want to congratulate my teammates Aqeel Khan, Shehryar Salamat and Hadi Hussain for their commitment, professionalism and outstanding teamwork throughout the championship. Every member of the squad played an important role in helping us reach the final.” Aisam reserved special appreciation for Ambassador Paulo Domingues for attending the closing ceremony and supporting the Pakistani team during its stay in Portugal. “Gestures like these strengthen the friendship between our two countries and meant a great deal to our team,” he said.
