Man Utd Agree £46m Deal to Sign Ederson From Atalanta

Manchester United have reached a full agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to Italian journalist Luca Cilli.

Man United face a crucial summer in the transfer window where they have the opportunity to make some big strides forward after a successful 2025/26 season.

Michael Carrick was confirmed as the club's new permanent manager on Friday after a stunning caretaker spell in charge that saw no other Premier League team take more points than he did (36).

The Red Devils confirmed Champions League football for next season with three league games to spare, and now work must start between Carrick, director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, to ensure that the squad is strong enough to battle well on all fronts next season.

Central midfield has been identified as a key priority position that needs strengthening this summer, with Brazilian veteran Casemiro already confirmed to have played his final game for the club ahead of an expected summer move to Inter Miami.

Manuel Ugarte's future is also in major doubt, with one report claiming that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen for the club to sell the Uruguay international, who has struggled for the majority of his two years at Old Trafford.

Man United Agree £46m Ederson Transfer

According to Italian journalist Cilli, posting on X on Friday morning, Atalanta have concluded a deal with Manchester United for the transfer of midfielder Ederson.

A full agreement is said to have been reached between the two clubs worth an initial €48m (£42), plus another €5m (£4m) in add-ons.

Previous reports had suggested that the Brazilian had already agreed to join the Red Devils with an agreement over personal terms reached, and now it appears as though the clubs have agreed on a deal too.

Atletico Madrid had previously been keen to sign the 26-year-old, but they baulked at Atalanta's valuation of a player who only has one year remaining on his contract in Bergamo.

Ederson has been one of the best in his position in Serie A in recent years, being described as 'world-class' by his former manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The midfielder missed out on a spot in Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad, which means he will be able to link up with United at the beginning of pre-season if and when a deal is finalised.

Which Other Midfielders Could Man United Sign?

Man United's number one target as they look for an elite replacement for the departing Casemiro is Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, but the feeling is that the England international would prefer to join rivals Manchester City instead.

United are targeting other Premier League-based midfielders too, in Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes and Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, and now they must decide if they are going to firm up their interest in any of them.

As well as Ederson, the Red Devils have targeted other players who have no Premier League experience, including Real Madrid duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, who were recently fined €500,000 each after a training ground altercation that saw the latter hospitalised.
