Harry Maguire signs new Man United contract until next summer

Harry Maguire has been rewarded for his good form with a new contract that will keep him at Manchester United until at least the end of next season.

Maguire’s contract was due to expire at the end of this season but on Tuesday morning, United announced that their former captain had signed a one-year contract that the club can extend by a further year if they wish.

The precise details regarding Maguire’s wage are not known, but The Times understands that he has taken a pay cut to stay at the club because his market value is not the same as it was in 2019 when he signed a £190,000-a-week deal upon joining the club from Leicester City.

The £80million that United paid for the centre half remains the world-record fee for a defender.

That Maguire has been given a contract at the age of 33 confirms, however, that he is an important part of the squad and shows how well he has been playing this season.

The defender has started every match under head coach Michael Carrick and his performances earned him a recall to the England squad last month.

Maguire is hoping to persuade Thomas Tuchel to include him in the final England squad for the World Cup when it is announced next month.

“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day,” Maguire said.

“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

Maguire’s career at United has had plenty of ups and downs. Six months after being signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire replaced Ashley Young as captain.

In 2023, Solskjaer’s successor Erik ten Hag, stripped Maguire of the captaincy and tried to force him out of the club, but the player rejected an offer from West Ham United because he thought he could win back his place in the United team and he proved his critics wrong.

“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United,” Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, said.

“He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad. Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire has played 266 times for United and scored 17 goals. During his seven seasons at United, he has won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Maguire will miss United’s next match against Leeds United because he was sent off in the draw against Bournemouth that preceded the international break.

That could leave Carrick with a problem at the back as Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt have been out with calf and back injuries of late. Martínez, however, has travelled to Dublin this week for the club’s four-day training camp.
