Man Utd fans react as Mateus Fernandes misses another game for Spurs, prediction is coming true

Andrey Santos and Mason Mount are running games in midfield, while Mateus Fernandes has just missed another game for Spurs.

For comparison, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans combined cost as much as Mateus Fernandes, who joined Spurs for £85m.

Man Utd refused to go that high, and after Fernandes’ fast start at Spurs, questions were raised about the club’s (lack of) ambition.

However, the prediction is coming true as Fernandes has now missed his second game in a row for Spurs.

Man Utd fans react to Mateus Fernandes’ absence for Spurs

Fernandes has largely been a reliable presence for Southampton and West Ham for the last two seasons, which is also why United were attracted to him.

However, when he joined Spurs, many predictions were made that he was joining a club that was “cursed”, and instead of Fernandes healing them, they’d infect him.

Having missed back-to-back games for Spurs now, the prediction is coming true, as “tiredness” has been converted to “small injury”, and who knows where this stops if he keeps missing games.

“Occurred when he was trying to run away from Spurs’ training,” quipped one Man Utd fan in a bit of schadenfreude.

“Like clockwork, Mateus Fernandes, welcome to the Spurs football experience,” said another, revelling in the feeling of vindication.

A third called out Spurs for poorly managing the situation, “He’s clearly injured. ‘Fatigue’ is the term you use when you don’t want to draw attention to it. 21-year-olds, three weeks into pre-season, don’t need ‘rest’ or ‘managing’. He didn’t miss a game for West Ham last season.”

Man Utd fans even brought former managerial target Roberto de Zerbi into the equation: “You’ll (Spurs) need a treatment room three times the current size to play the De Zerbi way!”

“£85m and made of glass,” said another, as a fifth brought back a famous meme, writing, “This is the heritage of the Tottenham.”

Another Man Utd fan didn’t miss out on bringing another target, Sandro Tonali, into the conversation, writing, “They’ve already killed Fernandes, Tonali next.”

Spurs’ next game is against Getafe on August 8, and it’s clear that they are already feeling the pressure of protecting their £85m signing by leaving wrong briefs about his absence upon joining.
