WTA Toronto Quarterfinal Predictions

Coco Gauff vs Belinda Bencic

Head-to-head: Gauff 6-2 Bencic

Coco Gauff heads into this quarter-final as the clear favourite, and the numbers back it up: she’s won six of their eight meetings and taken the last four in a row. But don’t expect a blowout in this one, as three of their last three clashes have gone the distance, and Belinda Bencic arrives in career-best form, having just steamrolled a red-hot Alexandra Eala 6-4 6-0 to book her spot in the WTA Montreal last eight.

Gauff was similarly ruthless in the third round, dropping just four games against Alina Korneeva, so both players come into this match looking sharp. Expect another tight, physical battle – but in the end the American should have enough to advance. This pair have a lot in common in terms of how they approach a match, but Gauff just does most things that much better than Bencic.

In particular, the American’s superior momevement and range of shots should give her the edge when the rallies stretch out – just as they have in their past four meetings.

Prediction: Gauff in 3

Elena Rybakina vs Naomi Osaka

Head-to-head: first meeting

Somewhat surprisingly, this will be the first meeting between Naomi Osaka and Elena Rybakina despite both having competed (fairly) consistently at the top of the women’s game for some years.

Osaka rolls into the WTA Toronto quarterfinals in ominous form, having dispatched home hope Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-4 to claim her 13th win in her last 15 matches. She also has still not dropped set so far , and now she gets Elena Rybakina, who needed a wild double-break comeback just to survive Liudmila Samsonova.

Rybakina should win this according to their respective rankings, but on form this is Osaka’s match to lose: her serve is firing, her baseline game is fearless, and the world #2 has looked slightly shaky of late. Osaka should have enough to keep the momentum rolling into the WTA Toronta semifinals.

Prediction: Osaka in 3
