Dig at CSK? Shubman Gill poses with whistle in Chennai, sparks mixed fan reactions

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill found himself at the centre of a digital storm on Monday, following a post-match post that has divided fans on social media. Following his team's emphatic victory over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, Gill took to Instagram to share a photo of himself holding a yellow whistle-the iconic symbol of the CSK Whistle Podu anthem, accompanied by the caption, 'Nandri Chennai' (Thank you, Chennai).

While intended as a gesture of gratitude to the Chennai crowd, the post has been interpreted by many as a subtle "dig" or a "troll" directed at the home franchise after their defeat. CSK vs GT, IPL 2026: Highlights | Scorecard

The reaction was immediate and polarised. For a section of the CSK faithful, the sight of an opposing captain posing with their sacred symbol in their own backyard felt like an unnecessary provocation.

On the other hand, supporters and neutral observers defended the 26-year-old, arguing that the gesture was a "boss move" and a playful nod to the atmosphere.

GT SILENCE CSK AT CHEPAUK

The social media drama followed a match where Gujarat Titans were anything but playful. Chasing a target of 159, GT turned the fortress of Chepauk into their playground, winning with 20 balls to spare.

The chase was headlined by a masterclass from Sai Sudharsan, who haunted his home state with a blistering 87 off 46 balls. Sudharsan's innings, punctuated by seven towering sixes, overshadowed a valiant unbeaten 74 from CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Gill himself provided the early spark, racing to a quick-fire start alongside Sudharsan before being stumped off the bowling of Sanju Samson. Despite Gill's dismissal, the Titans never lost momentum, with Jos Buttler playing a calm supporting role to seal the eight-wicket victory.

Earlier in the day, CSK struggled to find their rhythm against a disciplined GT attack. Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj dismantled the CSK top order during the Powerplay, leaving the hosts reeling at 37/4.

However, the match was not without its share of controversy. A marginal non-call on a potential front-foot no-ball by Arshad Khan in the 19th over – which resulted in the dismissal of Jamie Overton the following delivery – left the Chennai dugout and fans fuming.

Nonetheless, CSK failed to fire in unison with the bat. Ruturaj made up for his slow start, but lack of contributions from the likes of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis meant they were not able to push on and post a competitive total.
