A woman has accused Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel of having a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage. According to Anandabazar Patrika, the medical student from Karnataka has filed a complaint against him at the Mogra Police Station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district.

According to the complaint, the woman claimed she and Porel were in a relationship for three years and had planned to get married. She alleged that problems arose between them around a year and a half ago. The matter had previously reached a police station, but no formal complaint was lodged at that time.

The woman visited the Mogra Police Station with her mother on Tuesday and submitted a complaint against the cricketer. The police have initiated an investigation into the allegations.

The report said Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh visited the police station after learning of the case. He held discussions with officer-in-charge Soumen Biswas and DSP (Crime) Abhijit Singh Mohapatra regarding the next course of action. Police sources told the newspaper that instructions had been issued and the matter was being investigated.

The paper said that the complaint contains allegations including sexual intercourse on the promise of marriage, assault, and intimidation.

Abishek Porel denies allegations

Porel, who is currently based in Bengaluru, denied the allegations and said he had not yet been contacted by police.

“I am playing well now, so various things are coming up," Porel was quoted as saying. He added that he had been busy with family matters following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League season.

The 23-year-old also said he would respond in greater detail once police complete their initial investigation.

“I will talk about this when the police investigate. I have not spoken to the police yet," he said.

Porel recently represented the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, scoring 108 runs in four matches. He’s a regular for Bengal cricket.
