Wednesday’s quarterfinals at the Mutua Madrid Open feature two intriguing matchups. First, a pair of rising talents in Arthur Fils and Jiri Lehecka, followed by what promises to be a blockbuster between world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and the tournament’s feel-good story, local teenager Rafael Jodar. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for both matches. But who will advance?ATP Madrid Quarterfinal PredictionsArthur Fils vs Jiri LeheckaHead-to-Head: Fils 2-2 LeheckaThe series between these two is level at 2-2, though their most recent encounter at Miami told a lopsided story, Lehecka eased to a 6-2 6-2 win with Fils in the middle of a comeback from a lengthy injury layoff. What makes this quarterfinal so intriguing is the surface switch. Fils carries an extraordinary 8-0 clay record against all opponents since the French Open last year. Lehecka, while enjoying a strong season, holds a more modest 6-1 win rate on clay in that time.Fils has been finding himself in 2026, and his heavy forehand and aggressive serve have been increasingly difficult to handle. He dispatched Etcheverry convincingly in the round of 16, finishing with 17 winners and just 15 unforced errors while saving all four break points he faced. Lehecka, meanwhile, eased past Musetti 6-3 6-3 in his round of sixteen and is a former Madrid semi-finalist, having reached that stage in 2024. The Czech is capable of big tennis on any surface, but Fils’ dominance on clay specifically is hard to overlook. The red dirt seems to bring out a different level of consistency from the Frenchman, and that edge should carry him through here.Prediction: Fils in 3Jannik Sinner vs Rafael JodarHead-to-Head: First meetingJodar’s breakout 2026 campaign has been one of the stories of the season. The 19-year-old Madrid native has climbed from No. 687 a year ago to a career-high ranking, captured his first ATP title in Marrakech, reached the Barcelona semifinals, and now stands one win away from his first Masters 1000 semifinal on home soil. The home crowd will be electric, and the big occasion clearly hasn’t intimidated him yet. That said, Sinner is a different beast. The world No. 1 is chasing history as he aims to become the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles. He has looked largely untroubled en route to the quarterfinal and brings an elite clay record over the past 52 weeks (88.9% win rate). His serve efficiency and break-point defense present a level of consistency and physical dominance that Jodar has not yet faced at this stage. The teenager’s moment in the spotlight is coming, but Sinner’s combination of elite defense, serve, and current momentum makes him the heavy favorite.Prediction: Sinner in 2Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images
