How Ronaldo fared in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales after vowing to continue international career

There was plenty of speculation around Cristiano Ronaldo's future in international football.

Portugal's World Cup journey ended against Spain in the last-16 and Ronaldo was heavily criticised for his performances at the tournament.

After saying the summer's World Cup was his last, many expected the 41-year-old to announce his retirement from international football.

However, the forward surprised everyone by confirming he will continue playing for Portugal, as he targets 1,000 career goals.

Ronaldo started Thursday's home win over Wales, but it proved to be a frustrating outing for him.

He failed to add to his tally of 146 international goals, missing a slew of scoring chances.

It was his Al-Nassr team-mate Joao Felix who delivered the decisive goal midway through the first half.

Felix beat goalkeeper Danny Ward from around 20 yards out with the help of a deflection off Ben Davies.

Ronaldo had the opportunity to double their advantage early in the second half when he sent a volley off target from six yards out.

He finally put the ball into the net just before the hour mark, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Ronaldo had seven shots in the game with an xG of 1.03. He was replaced by Joao Palhinha after 67 minutes.
