Why England fans can't stop singing Oasis's 'Wonderwall' after every World Cup win

After Sunday night's thrilling 3-2 win against Mexico, England players joined their fans once again in a massive sing-along of "Wonderwall" by British rock band Oasis.

It has become a familiar sound throughout the tournament after making its first appearance on June 17 in the wake of the opening-group stage win by the Three Lions against Croatia to get England’s World Cup drive up and running.

Traveling England supporters started singing after the final whistle as the hit blared out around the AT&T Stadium, with Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane among the England stars joining in with the crowd.

The song has been played after every England game since, becoming an unofficial anthem for fans.

Kane himself said singing with fans after the match against Croatia counted as one of his "favorite-ever" moments in an England shirt.

"Currently, we share that connection, but that specific instance, singing "Wonderwall" in the stadium. … Everyone was familiar with the lyrics, and it truly was a remarkable moment," the striker told BBC News.

Last night, the striker even lost his voice thanks to singing the tune at the top of his lungs, as heard in this hilarious post-match interview.

The song has firmly replaced England's previous sing-along classic Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" — which became popular during the 2020 Euros — with "Wonderwall" now being heard in the bars, streets and stands as England wins again.

Oasis band member Noel Gallagher has also given the song's repurposing the seal of approval, telling British newspaper the Sun that the song "belongs to the people" and describing the fan–player sing-alongs as "magical."

His brother, lead singer Liam Gallagher, even jumped on the bandwagon. "C'mon England c'mon Wonderwall," he wrote on X after England's nail-biting win over DR Congo.

Why are fans singing Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’?

According to Reuters, each team at the World Cup has a "signature" song played for when the lineup is announced, a warm-up song, and a track that is played if the team scores a goal. After the game, the winning set of fans get to sing along to a post-match tune.

Before the tournament, England submitted three songs to FIFA to be played in stadiums; one was "Wonderwall," alongside "Sweet Caroline" and "Hey Jude," in tribute to star midfielder Jude Bellingham.

"Wonderwall" is considered one of the best-known songs by Oasis and is regarded as one of the most recognizable anthems of Britpop — the indie music that became popular in the 1990s.

Peaking at No 2 in the U.K. singles chart in 1995, it has sustained its popularity over the past 30 years. In 2024, the same year the band announced a wildly successful global reunion tour, the U.K.'s Official Charts Company named "Wonderwall" the most‑streamed song from the 1970s–1990s in the U.K.

The track has also enjoyed global success in the United States, Canada, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Germany, France and Italy.

Oasis's successful reunion tour in 2025 gave the song even more airtime.

To some fans, the lyrics encapsulate the bittersweet feeling of being a football fan.

While England has faced its challenges to secure a quarter-final spot — "all the roads we have to walk are winding" — fans also remain hopeful. "You're gonna be the one that saves me," they sing, investing their dreams in the squad and willing Kane, Bellingham and company to deliver performances that turn decades of near‑misses into genuine belief that this time, after all, England might finally secure another World Cup victory after decades of hurt dating back to 1966.

If you want to join the England squad in the sing-along at the team’s next match against Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday, here are the lyrics to "Wonderwall":

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you

By now, you should've somehow realized what you gotta do

I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And backbeat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out

I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt

I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding

And all the lights that lead us there are blinding

There are many things that I would like to say to you

But I don't know how

Because maybe

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day, but they'll never throw it back to you

By now, you should've somehow realized what you're not to do

I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding

And all the lights that light the way are blinding

There are many things that I would like to say to you

But I don't know how

I said, Maybe

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said, Maybe (I said maybe)

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said, Maybe (I said maybe)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
