Andoni Iraola has just sealed biggest Liverpool win yet without playing a match

Andoni Iraola is set to celebrate a major victory very early into his Liverpool tenure, because Dominik Szoboszlai is set to commit his long-term future to the club. Szoboszlai is poised to bring an end to any uncertainty surrounding his position at the club. Szoboszlai has become one of the Reds' most vital players since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2023.

After playing a crucial part in Liverpool's Premier League title success in 2025, he emerged as the outstanding player during what proved a frustrating subsequent campaign for the club, claiming the Player of the Season accolade. Some uncertainty has surrounded his future at Anfield, with Real Madrid reportedly showing interest in securing his signature, though he now appears set to dispel any concerns.

Reports from Hungary suggest the midfielder will put pen to paper on a new deal today, having reached an agreement following discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes.

The Athletic have also confirmed that terms have been agreed for a new long-term deal, with Liverpool securing the services of Szoboszlai, who has two years remaining on his existing contract.

A fresh deal for Szoboszlai has been under negotiation for some time, with the midfielder having acknowledged earlier this year that he was in discussions with the club, though he offered no suggestion that he was near to finalising new terms at that stage.

"As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation," Szoboszlai told reporters following the Merseyside derby back in April.

"We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let's see.

"Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. I'm completely relaxed."

Szoboszlai is amongst the players who have returned to pre-season training in preparation for the new campaign, with Liverpool's new head coach Andoni Iraola obtaining his first look at his new squad this summer.
