There are players who rise rapidly through the ATP rankings and immediately make their presence felt among fans with their talent and personality. Then there are those who quietly climb the rankings, producing one impressive result after another while remaining relatively under the radar.

Learner Tien belongs somewhere in between. The 20-year-old American has made a remarkable jump from No. 150 to inside the Top 20, reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, and has now made his first Masters 1000 semifinal at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

The 2026 season has been a breakthrough year for Tien. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and followed that up with another quarterfinal appearance at the Indian Wells Masters, where he defeated his upcoming Montreal semifinal opponent, Ben Shelton.

Tien has continued that impressive run in Canada. The American defeated Tommy Paul and Gael Monfils on his way to the semifinals, and he now owns a 25-13 win-loss record on the ATP Tour this season. Against Shelton, Tien has a perfect 2-0 head-to-head record.

But how did Learner Tien get into tennis, and who are the people behind his remarkable rise?

Who Are Learner Tien's Parents, Khuong Dan Tien and Huyen Tien?

Tien was born in Irvine, California, to Vietnamese immigrant parents Khuong Dan Tien and Huyen Tien. His father's journey to the United States began when he was just 7 or 8 years old, after his family fled the aftermath of the Vietnam War.

Khuong Dan later built a career as a real estate attorney, while Huyen worked as a math teacher. Their own journeys to the United States, however, were very different.

In a documentary, Khuong Dan revealed that his journey to America was relatively safe compared to that of his wife. Huyen endured a difficult 10-day journey at sea as a boat refugee and survived pirate attacks before eventually reaching the United States.

The couple also gave their children names that reflected their professions and philosophies. Their son was named Learner because, as his father explained, a teacher always seeks a learner. Their daughter was named Justice because a lawyer always seeks justice.

How Did Learner Tien Get Into Tennis?

Tien's introduction to tennis was almost entirely accidental. His parents were recreational tennis players and actually met on a tennis court. Khuong Dan also competed in local tournaments in Southern California, and the family would take young Learner along to the courts while he played.

Tennis, however, did not immediately capture the youngster's imagination.

Tien has admitted that he had virtually no interest in the sport as a child. His biggest motivation for accompanying his parents to the tennis courts was simply getting frozen lemonade from the snack bar.

That eventually changed, and what began as a way to pass the time would turn into a professional tennis career that has now taken Tien into the Top 20.

Learner Tien and Coach Michael Chang: A Promising Partnership

Tien also made headlines in 2025 when he added American tennis legend Michael Chang to his coaching team. Although Chang has not been available throughout the 2026 season, his experience as a former Grand Slam champion has added significant value to Tien's development.

Chang's influence can be seen in the way Tien approaches the game. The youngster has embraced elements of the American's defensive counterpunching style, along with the never-give-up mentality that defined much of Chang's own career.

Before Chang joined the team, Tien was already working with Erik Kortland as his primary coach. Kortland has an impressive coaching resume and previously worked as a USTA player development national coach.

He has also worked with players such as Amanda Anisimova, helping guide her to a junior French Open title, and mentored Coco Gauff and other young American players during their Junior Fed Cup careers.

Together, the experience of Kortland and Chang has given Tien an impressive coaching setup as he continues to make his way toward the top of men's tennis.

Is Learner Tien Dating Anyone?

Away from tennis, Tien has largely kept his personal life private. However, he has been linked with Isabella Chhiv, a 21-year-old collegiate tennis player at Princeton University.

Chhiv is a member of Princeton's Class of 2027 and studies in the School of Public and International Affairs. She is originally from Orange County, California.

The two have not publicly confirmed their relationship, but Tien was seen celebrating Chhiv's recent success with the Princeton Tigers women's tennis team after they clinched a share of the 2026 Ivy League Championship with a 4-1 victory over Brown.

For now, Tien's focus remains firmly on his tennis. After climbing from No. 150 into the Top 20, reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, and now breaking through to his first Masters 1000 semifinal, the American has quickly become one of the most intriguing young players on the ATP Tour.
