Everton set for unexpected financial boost as Man Utd forced to change transfer plans

The transfer window is still ongoing, but it appears Manchester United are set to hand Everton a windfall the Toffees would not have been expecting

Everton will net a transfer windfall if Manchester United purchase Antonee Robinson from Fulham. The left-back has emerged as a transfer target for the Red Devils.

Robinson started his football career with the Toffees, coming through the ranks at Finch Farm. However, he was unable to make a senior appearance for the club, as he was sent on loan spells to Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, before he moved permanently to the latter in the 2019-20 campaign.

Fulham then came in for him in 2020, where he has established himself as one of the Premier League's best left-backs. His form has seen him earn the attention of United. If United were to sign him, a clause in his deal at Craven Cottage will earn Everton a portion of the transfer fee.

When Wigan flogged him to Fulham, they inserted a clause which stated they will receive 20% of any profit made on any sale. Everton are on the end of this chain, as their own transfer clause within their deal to sell him to Wigan, states the Blues will make 33% of any profit Wigan earn from their own sell-on clause.

At present, Robinson is valued at around £28m by the Cottagers. If United, or any other team, meet this fee, Everton are expected to make around £1.5m.

It's a small figure in comparison with the fees being thrown around, but it's a tidy sum to make for a player who left Everton six years ago. Robinson had to compete with both Leighton Baines and Lucas Digne for a place at left-back.

Realising he was always going to be up against it, he held honest discussions with the Everton board and decided to leave for Wigan. Looking back on those talks in a previous interview in August 2020, he said: "Not one regret, no. Everton were always really honest with me.

"They just said, 'We’ve got rid of a few players but we definitely need to keep Bainesy. We can’t get rid of Jags, the captain, and lose Baines as well. It’s getting rid of so much of Everton in the changing room and he’s such a good player.

"'We’ve got him and Digne starts for us so you have to wait for two injuries to start. You’re not even making the bench at the minute.

"We think it’s best for you if you just leave. It’s nothing to do with you, it’s just you need to play.’

"I am really thankful they were that upfront and honest with me because it gave me the chance to go away and progress elsewhere.”

For Fulham, Robinson has made 158 appearances, contributing one goal and 17 assists for the west Londoners.
