Justin Langer out of race, Tom Moody still in mix, leading contenders

Former Australian coach Justin Langer is reportedly no longer in the race for England’s vacant Test coaching role, with the search narrowed ahead of next month’s series against Pakistan.

According to The Telegraph, Langer has not made England’s current shortlist despite earlier being linked with the position following Brendon McCullum’s departure.

England are hoping to have a new coach in place before the opening Test against Pakistan on August 19, with interviews for the role beginning this week as the ECB accelerates its search.

Former England batter Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson have emerged as the leading contenders, with England looking to revive its standing in Test cricket following the downfall of the much-hyped ‘Bazball’ era.

Should the recruitment process extend beyond the ECB’s preferred timeline, Marcus Trescothick is expected to step in as interim head coach.

While the current focus is on domestic candidates, overseas options remain a possibility.

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is yet to be approached for an interview but cannot be ruled out if England decides to expand its search internationally.

Fleming recently ended an extraordinary 16-year tenure with the Chennai Super Kings, guiding the IPL franchise to five titles, and is widely regarded as one of the finest coaches never to have taken charge of an international side.

The 53-year-old also shares a close relationship with McCullum after the pair spent years together as teammates for New Zealand, a connection that could appeal if England looks beyond its current shortlist.

Former Australian batsman Tom Moody, now Global Director of Cricket for the Lucknow Super Giants, has also been linked with the role after first being considered more than a decade ago.

Langer’s name gained traction after Andy Flower ruled himself out because of his Indian Premier League commitments, but the former Australian coach is not currently among the candidates being interviewed.

The timeline appears to favour both Trott and Dawson.

Dawson could take up the role immediately, with Glamorgan willing to release him, while Trott is currently coaching in Ireland on a short-term assignment that would allow him to transition into the position if appointed.

Both have built impressive coaching resumes in recent years.

Trott spent four years in charge of Afghanistan, leading the side to a historic semi-final appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup before departing earlier this year. He is also understood to have already held discussions with the ECB regarding the Test coaching vacancy.

Dawson, meanwhile, guided Glamorgan to promotion last season after leaving England’s white-ball coaching set-up when McCullum assumed responsibility across all formats.
