Ghana turned six big shopping malls into World Cup stadiums, drawing over 250,000 fan engagements

When the World Cup kicked off, Ghana didn’t need a single stadium ticket to watch it. It needed a mall. Over 39 consecutive days, six of Accra’s biggest shopping centres were transformed into fan zones, drawing more than 250,000 fan engagements in what organisers are calling the largest coordinated fan-zone activation the country has ever run.

The campaign, “The Mall is the Stadium,” turned everyday retail spaces into communal viewing arenas, with big screens, DJs, giveaways, and roaring crowds, proving that for football-hungry fans, the nearest mall could feel just as electric as the nearest stadium. No tickets, no travel, no barriers to entry, just a car park, a giant screen, and a crowd that showed up night after night in the colours of teams thousands of miles away.

For a country with a deep, longstanding football culture, the concept answered a simple question: what if the places people already gather to shop, eat, and socialise became the places they gathered to watch? The answer, organisers say, exceeded every projection.

Each venue carried its own identity and crowd, but all were tied together by shared production standards: large-format screens, live commentary and hosting, DJ sets between matches, on-site giveaways, and security and crowd management befitting an event of national scale. Organisers describe it less as six separate screenings and more as one distributed stadium, stitched together across the city.

The Numbers Behind the Movement

250,000+ fan engagements recorded across the six-mall network over the tournament window

234 total activation days delivered: 39 consecutive days multiplied across six venues running simultaneously

6 malls became stadiums: Accra Mall, West Hills Mall, Junction Mall, Achimota Retail Centre, Marina Mall, and Atlantic Mall

20+ partners activated on one platform, spanning banking, retail, media, mobility, and radio

GHS 100,000+ in giveaways and prizes placed directly into fans’ hands

50+ jobs created for the tournament window, generating over GHS 8 million in influenced retail spend for mall partners

100+ esports sign-ups in the first 10 hours of registration opening for the FIFA 26 tournament

1 title sponsor, 1xBet, backing the entire footprint

The venues at the heart of the campaign were: Accra Mall, West Hills Mall, Junction Mall, Achimota Retail Centre, Marina Mall, and Atlantic Mall, a spread deliberately chosen to cover Accra’s geography, so that no matter which part of the city a fan lived in, a full-scale viewing experience was within reach. Running all six concurrently for 39 straight days meant sustaining production, staffing, and crowd energy across 234 total activation days.

The campaign brought together more than 20 partners on a single platform, spanning banking, retail, media, and mobility, a rare example of that many categories sharing one footprint at scale. Title sponsor 1xBet backed the entire experience, describing it as the largest coordinated fan-zone footprint Ghana has run. Alongside 1xBet, the partner roster included GCB Bank, Yango, Wawolo, Enterprise Group, Club Beer, UMB, Decathlon, Rythmzs Africa, Esports Association Ghana, DSTV, Mad Mappers, AmeyawTV Sports, Zed 101.9FM, and MX24.

For the malls themselves, the activation translated into more than GHS 8 million in influenced retail spend, as fans who came for the football stayed to shop, eat, and browse.

Jobs, and Local Impact

Beyond the screens and the sponsors, the campaign had a tangible economic footprint. More than 50 direct jobs were created for the tournament window, including activation leads, hosts, technical crew, security personnel, and content creators, deployed across six venues for 39 consecutive days. Organisers also placed over GHS 100,000 in giveaways and prizes directly into fans’ hands, ranging from branded merchandise to big-ticket electronics, turning match nights into genuine reward moments for the crowds who showed up.

Beyond the football, the activation opened a new front in Ghana’s growing esports scene. A FIFA 26 tournament, run in partnership with the Esports Association Ghana, drew over 100 sign-ups within the first 10 hours of registration opening alone, a strong early signal of demand that organisers say points to where fan-zone culture may be headed next: not just watching football, but competing in it, live, in front of a crowd.

The Mall is the Stadium is a fan-zone activation platform that transforms shopping malls into large-scale communal viewing experiences during major football tournaments, combining live match broadcasts, entertainment, giveaways, and brand partnerships across multiple venues simultaneously. The campaign was powered by Jenius Mark.
