Mourinho in limbo as he waits for Real Madrid's emergency call

"Everyone knows the situation. When the season is over, we will have 10 days to decide whether we continue or whether we go our separate ways. I've already said what I had to say. I've already said enough, so there's no need to say anything else. What I've said, I've said. And I don't need to repeat it."

That was the blunt response given last Friday by Jose Mourinho about his possible continuity or not at Benfica next season. The Portuguese coach left the door open to a departure, which seems that it would end up being concretized without any doubt if Real Madrid were the club that came to look for him. According to several media outlets, the Portuguese coach could unilaterally terminate his contract without penalty until June 3

This would allow Real Madrid to have the advantage of closing the deal before the World Cup, something that would not be so easy with other candidates on the list such as Didier Deschamps or Mauricio Pochettino, who are immersed in agreements with their respective federations and focused on doing well in the tournament. Being able to close the deal early means being able to start work earlier on shaping the squad and designing the staff and pre-season.

Mourinho's answer would be "Yes"

Real Madrid could be a great opportunity for Mourinho to return to the top level of world football, something he has been away from in recent seasons. Some former players such as Guti have doubts about this: "Mourinho is a great coach, but I think he is no longer at his best, in the sense that he comes from Fenerbahce, took over at Benfica at a very difficult time, and I think there are coaches in better shape than Mou that I would sign," he reasoned.
