The first Kolkata Derby of the year promises to be one of the most significant in recent memory as Mohun Bagan Super Giant take on East Bengal in a crucial ISL 2025-26 fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

For Mohun Bagan, the equation is straightforward. Win the two remaining matches against East Bengal and SC Delhi and they will retain the title regardless of other results.

A loss or a draw against their city rivals would leave them relying on Inter Kashi to take points off East Bengal on the final matchday.

The Kolkata Derby also adds intrigue to the ISL 2025-26 Golden Boot race.

EBFC striker Youssef Ezzejjari leads the scoring charts with 10 goals in 11 matches, while Mohun Bagan’s Jamie Maclaren is just behind with nine goals from as many appearances.

The ISL 2025-26 winners will qualify for the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League Two 2026-27 season.

If MBSG, who are currently barred from AFC competitions, or FC Goa, who have already secured continental qualification by winning the Super Cup, finish top of the table, the AFC Champions League Two berth will pass to the next eligible team.
