Ferguson making 'daily progress' on road to recovery

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler has said Evan Ferguson is making "daily progress" in his recovery from the ankle injury that caused the 21-year-old such frustration last season.

The Republic of Ireland forward spent the campaign on loan at Roma, where he scored five goals in 22 games. However his stint in Italy ended in March after he required an ankle operation.

Ferguson missed Ireland's heartbreaking World Cup play-off defeat to Czechia, and is expected to remain sidelined for the early part of the new season, possibly up until Ocotber.

However Hurzeler did offer a brief, and somewhat positive update, on the Bettystown man after Brighton's 4-3 friendly win against Strasbourg in Austria on Saturday.

"Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are in rehab," Hurzeler said.

"Stef is the closest but Ferguson is making daily progress."

Although Fergsuon has been linked with a move away from the Seagulls, Danny Welbeck's departure to Chelsea could mean Hurzeler is keen to keep the Bettystown man on the books.

Brighton will also have European football to contend with this season after qualifying for the Conference League thanks to their eighth-placed finish in the league.
