HKFA technical director quits after signing new 2-year deal in blow to city football

Local football chiefs have been dealt a hammer blow after John Morling quit his post as technical director of The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) for a new role in the United Arab Emirates.

Morling recently signed a new two-year HKFA deal, but the Englishman has now chosen to join a UAE football revolution aimed at ending the country’s four-decade wait to reach the World Cup finals.

On Morling’s watch, the HKFA launched an under-22 Premier League, Hong Kong hosted its inaugural AFC Pro Licence Diploma and the city age-group teams grew more competitive following the implementation of an improved games programme.

The senior team, however, failed to reach next year’s Asian Cup finals, a setback that ultimately cost former head coach Ashley Westwood his job.

Morling was heavily involved in the six-month recruitment process for a new Hong Kong head coach that concluded in June with Roberto Losada being appointed to succeed Westwood. Currently serving his notice period, it is not clear when Morling will work his final day.

The HKFA has been asked for comment.
