Nathan Jones hails ‘electric’ Charlton performance in win over Cheltenham

Boss Nathan Jones described some of Charlton's football in their 3-1 win at Cheltenham as "electric".

First-half goals from Matty Godden, Sonny Carey and Tyreece Campbell were enough to take the Championship side safely through, with George Miller pulling one back for the League Two Robins in the second half.

"We were excellent," Jones said.

"We had a five or 10-minute spell in the second half when we went sloppy but first half we were electric at times, moving the ball really well and moving through the third really quickly.

"It could have been more – we could have been four or five up. Overall I am happy."

Godden fired wide with the first chance in the fourth minute, but two goals in two minutes put Charlton firmly in control.

Godden charged down a clearance from Robbie Cundy, allowing Carey to set him up for a finish which bounced in off the post in the 22nd minute.

Carey then fired in the second almost immediately to make it 2-0 and Campbell was teed up by Conor Coventry before curling a fine shot inside the top right corner in the 37th minute.

Cheltenham pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half when Joe Tomlinson's in-swinging corner was nodded in from close range by George Miller, but Charlton had done enough.

Robins boss Steve Cotterill described the game as the perfect preparation for their League Two opener against Rotherham.

"When we look at this one being the back end of our pre-season, it was a great game for us," he said.

"We've gone after them all game and that was good because it's what we want to do."
