Carragher was expecting Liverpool star to join Juventus

Jamie Carragher has been left shocked by Mohamed Salah's decision to choose Trabzonspor as his next club despite interest from Juventus. The Bianconeri were among the clubs competing for the Liverpool icon's signature and wanted to reunite him with Luciano Spalletti, who would have welcomed the opportunity to work with him.

However, the proposed deal proved too expensive for Juventus, even though Salah was a free agent. He also failed to receive a better offer from other top European clubs, leading him to choose a move to Türkiye instead.

Carragher surprised by Salah decision

Trabzonspor are not the biggest club in Türkiye, but they hope Salah can elevate the team and help them compete for trophies during his two seasons with the squad. The Egyptian remains in excellent shape and is still capable of performing at the highest level.

Carragher therefore expected Salah to remain in one of Europe's leading leagues. The former Liverpool defender believed the forward had enough quality to continue competing at the highest level and was surprised that he ultimately chose Trabzonspor.

The decision means Salah will now take on a new challenge away from one of Europe's traditional major leagues, despite previously attracting interest from clubs such as Juventus.

Carragher explains his reaction

Carragher explained his surprise at Salah's choice and suggested that financial demands may have influenced the situation. He said via Football Italia:

"I never believed he was going to go to Saudi, because number one, he's too good for that. I think he can be playing in Serie A. Turkey for me feels a level too low.

"I was convinced he'd end up at an AC Milan or Juventus or somewhere like that, maybe his wages were a problem. Looking at him, I don't know him, obviously I have never spoken to him."

Salah will now look to prove that he can make a significant impact with Trabzonspor, while Carragher will continue to believe that the Egyptian could still perform successfully at the highest level in European football.
