Gary Neville makes new Luke Shaw prediction for 2026/27 season after Man Utd star's impact vs Liverpool

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has dropped a powerful assessment of Luke Shaw’s role at Old Trafford after Manchester United’s victory over rivals Liverpool.

England star Luke Shaw has been in the starting XI for all 35 Premier League matches for Manchester United in the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old Man Utd left-back has been a key defensive figure for both former Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim and interim head coach Michael Carrick.

Shaw completed the full 90 minutes of Man Utd’s 3-2 win over Liverpool and the Three Lions international produced a strong showing for the Red Devils on the day.

Gary Neville thinks Man Utd will need to support Luke Shaw next season with another left-back option

Luke Shaw is under contract with Manchester United until 2027 and the former Southampton star has been a consistent performer in the current season so far.

United have been reduced to a 40-match campaign after failing to secure European football last season and making their early exit from the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

The limited run of fixtures has allowed Shaw to feature regularly for the Red Devils and the England international has not been held back by injuries this season.

Speaking after Man Utd’s win over Liverpool, Gary Neville insisted that Shaw will “struggle” next season if the Red Devils do not sign another left-back option.

“He will know he needs to rebuild the defence and midfield,” he said on Sky Sports’ The Gary Neville Podcast.

“If you’re going to play 4-4-2, which I am massively in favour of United doing, you have to have two very special players in there and have defenders who can play one-on-one.

“You’re asking a lot of the players. I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he may struggle.

“They need a centre-back, 100 per cent, and they need two midfield players.”

Gary Neville on what Michael Carrick must be thinking after Man Utd’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford

United legend Neville admitted that he feels former teammate Carrick would have expected the Red Devils to thump Liverpool by a sizeable scoreline margin.

“Michael Carrick will be very happy tonight, but I think he will also be disappointed deep down that they haven’t gone on to win that game 3-0 or 4-0,” he said.

“They should have killed that game and put Liverpool to sleep because they were nowhere near this football match.

“He’s won the game and that’s the most important thing, but Carrick won’t be fooled by some of what he saw in that second half.”

Man Utd’s victory at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon has ensured that the Red Devils will return to Champions League football for the 2026-27 campaign.
