Man Utd’s stance on signing a centre-back amid Harry Maguire’s new contract

Manchester United have been linked with centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window, despite agreeing on terms over a new contract for Harry Maguire.

As we approach the 2026 summer transfer window, the clear priority for Manchester United is the midfield department.

That is not to say United don’t plan on strengthening other areas of the team.

There is a need for a new left winger, left back and more as United prepare to compete in the Champions League.

How good was Ayden Heaven against Chelsea?! What a performance!

Man Utd eye Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven in centre-back hunt

Michael Carrick had a limited defence to select from as United beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez were both suspended, while Leny Yoro picked up an injury in training ahead of the match.

Although Maguire recently signed a new contract to remain at United for another year at least, the Red Devils are still considering options in the transfer market.

According to The Athletic, United want an imposing, left-footed defender, with the view of Ayden Heaven eventually growing into that role with more experience under his belt.

United also have high hopes for Yoro, along with Heaven, that they can form a formidable defensive partnership in the coming years.

Recruitment staff have stressed that an addition in defence is required to cope with the load of Champions League football. United will be competing in the domestic cup competitions, too.

It makes sense for United to consider options at centre-back, with doubts over Matthijs de Ligt and Martinez after injury-hit campaigns.

Maguire may have signed a new contract, but at the age of 33, he cannot be expected to play every fixture next season.

The report adds that one player under consideration is Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven.

Van de Ven, 25, is expected to attract interest regardless of where Tottenham finish in the league, as they currently sit in the relegation zone.

The Dutch defender is under contract until 2029, meaning his value is protected.
