Bills release new alternate "Nickel City" uniform

The Nikefication of the NFL has continued with a new alternate Bills uniform.

The “Nickel City” combo features a gray jersey and gray pants, along with a buffalo-free helmet that has distinct spring-football vibes. (It actually looks like the product of a make-your-own-uniform option in Madden gone wrong.)

The uniform was inspired by the Buffalo nickel, which was minted from 1913 through 1938. It featured a bison on one side. Which makes the decision to remove the buffalo from the helmet even more confusing.

But it makes plenty of sense to base the uniform on a unit of money, because it’s just another money grab. Yes, for more than a few nickels, fans can buy yet another Bills jersey.

At some point, the endless money grab has to yield to the basic reality of what does and doesn’t look good. While some Bills fans will try their best to say “these look great,” do they?

Moreover, the Bills don’t need gimmicks. They’re a successful team. Leave the outside-the-box stuff for the teams that can’t generate interest by winning. The Bills are one of the foundational AFL teams. There’s a history to their helmets and uniforms.

That history has officially been turned on its head.
