Lamine Yamal's next teenage threat is 16 and Europe's giants already want him

Lamine Yamal has changed expectations around how quickly a teenage footballer can emerge at the highest level, and another 16-year-old talent in France is beginning to attract the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs.

His name is Laciné Megnan-Pavé, a 1.87-meter striker developed by Montpellier who has been playing above his age group for years and became the youngest professional player in the French club's history.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal have already been linked with the teenager, according to L'Équipe, giving Montpellier an early warning that keeping one of its most promising academy talents may not be easy.

Who is Laciné Megnan-Pavé?

Born in Montpellier on March 7, 2010, Megnan-Pavé joined the club at U7 level and has spent almost his entire football development there.

His physical presence immediately stands out, but Montpellier describes him as much more than a powerful center forward. He can play with his back to goal, combine with teammates and attack the space behind defenders, making him an unusually complete striker for his age.

His development has been so rapid that Montpellier has consistently moved him into older age groups. Then came a historic decision.

On February 2, while still only 15 years old, Megnan-Pavé signed his first professional contract, keeping him at Montpellier until June 2028. Club president Laurent Nicollin confirmed that no player had ever signed professionally at such a young age in Montpellier's history.

L'Équipe reported that Montpellier wanted to protect its young star amid interest from Arsenal, Barcelona and particularly Chelsea.

He helped Montpellier reach the 2026 Coupe Gambardella final and scored three goals during the team's run, including against Vichy, Pontarlier and Nice. Montpellier eventually lost a dramatic final 3-2 against PSG at the Stade de France.

He has also captained France at U16 level, another indication of how highly he is regarded within his generation. For now, however, the teenager appears in no rush.

After signing his professional contract, Megnan-Pavé described the moment as a childhood dream but immediately added that it was “only the beginning.”

Lamine Yamal has already demonstrated how quickly a teenager can go from promising academy player to global superstar. Megnan-Pavé is nowhere near that level yet, and their positions and playing styles are very different.
