Sikh Union’s centenary celebrations hit their competitive peak this weekend as the club rolls out the high-octane Sikh Union Cricket Centenary Cup, an eight-over tournament running from today through Sunday.

It comes capping a month-long programme that has fused sport, culture and community engagement into a landmark 100-year milestone. The tournament, staged at Sikh Union Club, headlines a packed schedule that has already seen strong participation across cricket, hockey, badminton, golf, football, darts and a treasure hunt, underscoring the club’s enduring multi-sport footprint.

Kenya international Sukhdeep Singh set the early tone of the cricket festivities with a commanding display for Sikh Union Lions.

This drove them to a 21-run victory over Nairobi Royals after posting 109/5 in their allotted eight overs before restricting their opponents to 88/6 in 7.1 overs.

His explosive 34 off just 11 balls, laced with two boundaries and three sixes, earned him both Player of the Match and Best Batter honours as Jasraj Kundi’s two-wicket haul secured the Best Bowler accolade.

Beyond the field of play, the centenary programme led by chairman Hardial Kalsi has leaned heavily into legacy projects and global engagement.

It was highlighted by the unveiling of a newly laid blue Astroturf hockey pitch built to international standards, a facility set to host visiting teams from Malaysia, India and the United Kingdom as the club positions itself on the global stage.

The hockey tournament gets underway today and will run until May 9, sustaining the competitive tempo of the celebrations before the curtain falls on May 10 with a grand banquet at the club, bringing together members and stakeholders to mark a century of sporting excellence.

“Standards have been set, and only the sky’s the limit,” Kalsi said, framing the ambition driving Sikh Union’s next chapter as it builds on its status as one of Kenya’s premier multi-sport institutions.
