‘I don’t give a s***’: Kyrgios’ fiery clash with umpire as Aussie star in sad Wimbledon reveal

Volatile Australian Nick Kyrgios swore at an umpire and claimed he did not care if he was fined for the outburst as the former Wimbledon finalist made a stormy return to the All England Club.

Kyrgios has a well-earned reputation for controversial behaviour and his on-court antics were back in the spotlight on Wednesday in his first match at Wimbledon since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic.

The 31-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries in recent years, was given a wildcard entry into the men’s doubles alongside Alexander Bublik.

Kyrgios and Bublik were already a set down when the Kyrgios serve was broken at the start of the second.

As Kyrgios sat down at the changeover, French umpire Manuel Absolu was in conversation with the Australian.

Kyrgios shocked the crowd on Court 17 by shouting: “Honestly, at this point you can fine me, I honestly don’t even care.

“Honestly you can fine me, I don’t give a s**t. All these rules are so dumb anyway.”

Kyrgios and Bublik were beaten 6-3, 6-4 by sixth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in the first round on Wednesday.

“I would probably say pretty confidently my last Wimbledon,” Kyrgios later said, adding that toward the end of the match he was “looking around and taking everything in”.

“It would be hard to see myself coming back here again and competing.”

“It was an enjoyable doubles match. Going out with someone like Bublik, who keeps it pretty light-hearted, it’s a lot of fun.

“But at the same time, a lot of things were running through my head in the last couple of games, that’s for sure.”

The former World No. 7 went on to say: “This has always been a venue and a place where I’ve played my best tennis.

“My career kicked off here and my life changed forever after that.

“It was tough to have my last service game. I told (Bublik) at a change of ends, ‘look, this is probably my last service game ever at Wimbledon’.

“It was a lot of emotions, for sure. I’ve just got so many thoughts right now. You go from making finals of Grand Slams to struggling to play multiple singles matches.

“It’s just like the backing up and the day-to-day stress of being on tour full time. It’s not easy.

“I can tell the fans want more, but it’s heartbreaking to not be able to give it to them every single time.

“I’m at a very odd stage because I feel like I’m still hitting the ball amazingly.

“But I don’t know, something’s not there. You can’t just magically become one of the best players in the world.”

Kyrgios was fined three times, totalling £14,500 (AU$28,000), during his 2022 Wimbledon run, twice for swearing and once for spitting in the direction of a spectator.
