Martin Odegaard is looking to make even more history with Norway at the World Cup when they face England

Martin Odegaard will have the honour of leading his nation out to their first ever World Cup quarter-final fixture on Saturday night. The Norway captain will come up against favourites England, the country where he plays his football for Arsenal, in Miami Stadium.

Few would have given Norway a chance against the Three Lions heading into the tournament, but a historic and deserved 2-1 victory over Brazil in the last-16 shows they cannot be underestimated. While Erling Haaland stole headlines for his brace in that game, Odegaard impressed the connoisseurs, dancing around Brazil’s players and controlling the tempo throughout.

The 27-year-old now has the opportunity to take the best season of his career, trophy wise, to another level, having already lifted the Premier League trophy for the first time as Arsenal’s captain in May.

Now, football.london examines the midfield maestro’s lesser known life away from the football field, taking a look at his romantic and home life.

Famous wife

It is only right that Odegaard, as the golden boy of Norwegian football since he was just 15, married someone with significant star power. The playmaker began dating former professional Norwegian dancer and TV personality Helene Spilling in early 2023, though their relationship was largely kept private.

They made their first public appearance together at the London Football Awards in March 2023, before confirming their romance with public outings in London the following month.

Spilling, 30, is known for winning the 17th season of Norway’s version of Dancing with the Stars. She began dancing at the age of 12 and pursued her career in competitive dancing in Lithuania at one point.

She won the Norwegian dance championship 17 times throughout her competitive dancing career, while representing her country in European and world tournaments. Spilling is set to appear on the 2026 edition of the popular Norwegian reality series Mesternes Mester team in August.

She is the founder and owner of The Zone Dance Studio in Oslo, as well as being a brand ambassador for Thune - a leading jewellery brand in her home country.

Secret wedding

In August 2024, the couple announced they were expecting their first child by sharing a heartfelt pregnancy announcement on social media. On December 1, 2024, Odegaard and Spilling welcomed their first child, a son named Matheo.

Being the humble and understated character that he is, it later emerged that Odegaard had quietly married Spilling in a private civil ceremony in November 2024 without any public announcement initially. A major clue was that she officially changed her name to Helene Spilling Odegaard, having also been spotted wearing an engagement ring that summer.

The couple later celebrated their marriage with a larger wedding ceremony in Gjerdrum, Norway, in June 2025, attended by family, friends, and several of Odegaard's Arsenal teammates.

Stunning mansion

Odegaard and his wife reportedly moved into their dream English home in December 2024. According to Se og Hør, the mansion cost around £7.7million.

It is said to be located 30km north west of London in Hertfordshire - only half an hour away from Arsenal’s London Colney training centre. The report claims it is surrounded by high hedges and a dark gate, allowing for a sheltered and peaceful life far away from fans and paparazzi cameras.

It comes after Odegaard bought a cabin plot in Hafjell, a popular ski destination, in his native Norway. The 1,100-1,350 square metre property is situated close to his team-mates Sander Berge and Stefan Strandberg .
