Nicolás Otamendi retires from Argentina after the 2026 World Cup Final

Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup Final marked the end of one of the most successful international careers in recent years. Nicolás Otamendi announced his retirement from the national team on Thursday after making 139 appearances for Argentina.

"I dreamed from a very young age of wearing the Argentina shirt. It was the greatest privilege football gave me," Otamendi said.

In his farewell message, Otamendi spoke about the loss to Spain, which became the final match of his international career.

"Fate wanted my last match to be a World Cup Final. It wasn't the result we wanted, but I leave with my head held high because this group fought until the very last second. I leave knowing I gave everything," he said.

"You made us feel that every time the national anthem played, we weren't just eleven players, but millions defending the same dream."

Otamendi also expressed gratitude to his family and shared a message for the players who will wear the national team shirt in the future.

"Never stop believing. There will be setbacks that seem impossible to overcome, but this shirt always rewards those who defend it with humility, sacrifice and love. Keep your heads up, keep fighting and never let a defeat steal your dreams."

Although he had previously stated that the 2026 World Cup would be his final tournament with Argentina, his official retirement came just days after the World Cup Final.
