Cricket world sends tributes after Aussie nemesis announces immediate retirement after 20 years

Cricket fans and fellow players are congratulating Ajinkya Rahane on a wonderful career after the Indian star announced his immediate retirement from all formats. The 38-year-old played 85 Tests, 90 one-day internationals and 20 T20 internationals across a 20-year professional career.

He scored over 8000 runs at international level and over 14,000 in first-class cricket. He was a constant thorn in Australia's side and famously led India to a 2-1 Test series victory on Aussie soil in 2020/21. India's win in Brisbane to clinch the series was the first by a visiting team at the Gabba in 32 years.

Rahane hadn't played at Test level since 2023 but was the current captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. "I've always relied on timing in my batting, and I've always understood its importance," Rahane said as he announced his retirement. "Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.

"From those early days traveling from Dombivli as a young boy just to practice, I gave this game everything I had. Every single day, every innings, every opportunity I got to bat, the dream was always to wear the India cap. I lived by one simple rule: always put my country and my team ahead of myself. I played this game with complete honesty, and I have always believed that if your intent is right, the game will always take care of you."

Cricket world pays tribute to Ajinkya Rahane

Former India captain Rohit Sharma led the tributes, writing online: "We've shared the dressing room for so many years, and I know how much hard work has gone into everything you've achieved. Your commitment and professionalism have always set you apart. Congratulations on a wonderful career. Best wishes."

Ravi Shastri, who was coach of India during the famous victory over Australia in 2020/21, wrote: "One of India's most committed cricketers who was an integral part of my tenure as coach and gave yeoman service to Mumbai and Indian cricket. Well done Jinks."

England legend Michael Vaughan commented: "Legend … thanks for the memories Jinks … Wonderful player & captain." While the Delhi Capitals added: "Congratulations on a wonderful career, Jinks! You will always be remembered for your leadership, calmness and the finesse with which you batted. Thanks, legend."
