Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle United showed interest in Man City midfielder

It is no secret that Newcastle United need to strengthen their midfield options this summer. Just look at how things have turned out so far in this transfer window, and what could, and is probably going to, still happen.

Newcastle United have seen Sandro Tonali leave for Tottenham Hotspur in a £100 million transfer deal. Bruno Guimaraes might be headed for North London as well although it is with Arsenal that he has agreed personal terms.

It is worth pointing out that there is no agreement between Arsenal and Newcastle United just yet. But, if you asked me whether this is going to happen or not, I would lean heavily towards the former.

In that case, that would mean that Newcastle United will have lost their two best midfielders in the same window. Arguably their two best overall players. And they will need some replacing, that is for sure.

Newcastle United have shown interest in Man City midfielder already

Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba are good talents without a shadow of a doubt. But as of this moment, neither might be ready to replace Guimaraes or Tonali.

That is the job for someone with more experience, and hopefully at the top level. Interestingly, Newcastle United showed interest in a Manchester City player earlier in this window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest are interested in Tijjani Reijnders. This comes after Newcastle United had shown interest in the Manchester City midfielder in June.

Of course, that was a couple of months ago. One has to wonder if that interest still remains. And could it be something that Newcastle United end up revisiting.

If so, they might have to move quickly. Nottingham Forest are perfectly capable of getting a deal done. So, if the Magpies still want Reijnders, they should make a concrete move before it gets too late.

Would Reijnders be a good signing for Newcastle?

Reijnders was signed by Manchester City from AC Milan last summer for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £46.5 million.

Did Reijnders meet expectations in his first season at Manchester City? Probably not, considering he started about half of the games and was largely on the bench in the second half of the campaign.

That being said, he did scored 7 goals and provide 8 assists in 47 appearances and 2810 minutes of football while playing largely as a central midfielder.

So, Reijnders is perfectly capable of contributing to most other teams in the Premier League. Will Newcastle United take a risk and make a move north of £50 million for him?
