IPL 2026: No one-man show as Jadeja and Archer leave LSG lost at home

Brief Scores: Rajasthan Royals (159/6) beat Lucknow Super Giants (119-all out in 18 ovs) by 40 runs at Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

Their middle-order credentials had been questioned. Dismiss Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal early, and you can exploit the Rajasthan Royals' soft underbelly—or so the theory went.

But on Wednesday, the former champions proved they are far more than a one-man show at the top, clinically outclassing Lucknow Super Giants by 40 runs. On a pitch that slowed considerably in the second innings, Rajasthan successfully defended 159—the lowest total protected this season—to deepen Lucknow's home-turf nightmares.

Ravindra Jadeja's all-round masterclass (a 29-ball 43 followed by a crucial wicket) and a disciplined bowling effort led by the tearaway duo of Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger ensured Rajasthan snapped a two-match losing streak. The victory propels them back to second in the IPL 2026 standings.

Conversely, Lucknow Super Giants have now lost seven on the trot at home, appearing utterly unable to find an exit from the Bhool Bhulaiya that the Ekana Stadium has become.

Captain Rishabh Pant is set to face significant scrutiny, particularly after a horrendous shot saw him dismissed for a duck at a moment when the home side desperately needed experienced heads to remain calm.

Mitchell Marsh waged a lone battle, striking 55 off 41 balls, but found no support from the other end. Only Nicholas Pooran (22) and Himmat Singh (15) managed to cross the 10-run mark as LSG remained rooted to ninth place.

Rajasthan Royals capitalised perfectly on a surface that transformed in the second half. Captain Riyan Parag acknowledged as much at the toss, noting he was happy to let Pant make the call. While bowling first was a sound tactical choice, it was another insipid display from the LSG batters that proved their undoing.

Their bowling group, spearheaded by Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan, had actually performed admirably, recovering well from their nightmarish outing in Mullanpur on Sunday.

A SPECIAL FROM JADEJA

Earlier in the day, it was Jadeja who rescued the Royals after the top order suffered its second collapse in three matches. The 37-year-old all-rounder, back in Rajasthan colours following a high-profile trade from Chennai Super Kings, utilised every ounce of his experience to steer the side out of trouble.

His gritty assault helped post a total that, while modest, offered his bowlers enough to work with on a pitch that flattered to deceive.

The greatest disappointment for the 40,000-strong crowd was the anticlimax involving Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Hundreds had traveled from across the region to witness the 15-year-old wunderkind's Lucknow debut.

With his hometown just an overnight drive away, 'Suryavanshi 003' t-shirts dominated the stands, but the teenager was unable to join the party. Bogged down by the early loss of partners, Suryavanshi's cautious approach ultimately backfired.

Credit must go to Lucknow's pacers, led by the wily Mohammed Shami. Running in with the same fire that has defined his decorated career, Shami won a gripping cat-and-mouse battle against Yashasvi Jaiswal. After conceding three boundaries in the third over, Shami unleashed a nasty bouncer that hurried the opener, leading to his downfall for 22.

Shami then welcomed Dhruv Jurel—who possesses a wealth of experience on these grounds—with a ripper in the corridor that nipped away to claim a thick outside edge. Shell-shocked, the Royals were forced into a defensive shell as out-of-form Riyan Parag joined the young Suryavanshi.

Pant showed impressive tactical wit by removing the in-form Prince Yadav from the attack despite the Najafgarh pacer testing Suryavanshi with sharp short-pitched deliveries. He turned instead to Mohsin Khan, banking on the left-armer's height and angle.

The move was inspired. Mohsin denied Suryavanshi any room, hitting a relentless 'Test match length' to produce the unthinkable: five consecutive dot balls against the most dreaded young hitter in the league. Frustrated, Suryavanshi attempted a desperate swipe across the line on the final delivery, only to top-edge it to Digvesh Rathi, whose 20-metre sprint from cover completed a game-changing catch.

Rajasthan huffed and puffed to 44 for 3, before Parag and Shimron Hetmyer attempted to steady the ship. Pant continued to rotate his pacers, trusting only one over of spin to Digvesh Rathi in the first ten. He had an enviable arsenal at his disposal-Shami, Prince, and Mohsin in the powerplay, followed by the return of Mayank Yadav.

While it was heartening to see Mayank clocking speeds north of 145 km/h in his first competitive match since February, he proved expensive, leaking 54 runs in his four overs. Rajasthan needed every bit of Jadeja's composure after they were reduced to 77 for 5 in the 11th over. Mohsin Khan produced a masterclass in pace variation, eventually deceiving Hetmyer with a delivery nearly 20 km/h faster than the previous ball.

Donovan Ferreira provided a brief spark before falling for 20 in the 16th over, forcing Rajasthan to use Shubham Dubey as their Impact Player. Dubey's handy 19 off 11 balls allowed him to stitch together a 49-run partnership with Jadeja, who provided the definitive finishing kick. Facing Mayank Yadav in the final over, Jadeja struck two boundaries and a six, plundering 20 crucial runs to ensure the Royals reached a competitive total.

In the end, those runs were the truth that LSG simply couldn't find.
