Burtonport man puts Donegal colours on World Cup stage!
A Donegal jersey made an appearance on football’s biggest stage as a Burtonport man was spotted among the crowd at the World Cup final.Eagle-eyed viewers noticed the green and gold during Spain’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Argentina at the New Jersey Stadium on Sunday. Spain secured its second World Cup title with an extra-time goal.The proud Donegal supporter was Brian Sweeney, who travelled to the occasion with his son Jonathan to cheer on Spain.Brian moved from Burtonport to Benidorm in 1995 and is well known as the man behind The Shamrock Bar in the popular Spanish resort.It has been quite a week of football for the Sweeney family. Jonathan plays for Alfaz, who lifted the Costa Blanca Cup just days before the World Cup final.Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Gary Doherty, also enjoyed the moment.“Spotted a lad with a Donegal top on at the World Cup Final. We’re everywhere,” he said.
